2009: The year of the smartphone?

Dear Den,

Monday saw the beginning of celebrations for the Chinese
New Year. With 2009 marked as the year of the Ox; considered by
Chinese astrologers as a symbol of prosperity, how well-off
anyone will become over the next few months remains to be
seen. However, digital innovations consultancy Fjord predict
this year will be a big success for manufacturers and
developers of the iPhone and Android platforms.

Chinese companies like Huawei or Taiwan's HTC are particularly
well placed to take advantage of the open platform which may
offer a sliver of hope to some of the 40 million Chinese
workers whose jobs are currently under threat.

It's not all bad news though, the rise of the touch screen
interface continues to develop in other sectors with Frontier
Silicon looking to exploit the multimedia market by combining
touch screen DAB radios with targeted advertising information.

Maybe there is the opportunity for prosperity in the coming
months, even if it is spread a little thin.
