Google's Android goes supersize

Dear Den,

Google's Android platform continues to gain support from manufacturers
with Archos this week announcing specs for its Internet Media Tablet.

Part mobile phone, part netbook, the IMT comes with a 5in screen and
500GB storage. Able to record and playback high-definition TV and
playback as well as web-browsing, the device may well find a niche for
those wanting a better multimedia experience than their current
smartphone can offer.

Ebook fans should be happy to hear Amazon will be launching its new
Kindle 2 reader later this year.

However, for those of us in the UK, the question remains whether we will
ever have a chance to get our hands on one: the arcane differences in
copyright laws between Euro member states, mean we won't see the Kindle
this side of the pond for sometime yet. But surely that's a question of
when, not if - and with nearly a quarter of a million titles available
through Amazon.com you can't help feeling we're missing out somewhat.

Keen to join the ebook reader party, Cambridge-based Plastic Logic, has
just released plans for its own innovative device. Having already
secured its own publishing deals, it may have better luck rolling out
the device on these shores.

Talking of follow-ups, Samsung Electronics has just released a second
offering from its N-series range of netbooks. The NC20 runs on Window's
XP home edition, is equipped with a 12.1in display, 1GB of memory, and a
160GB hard drive. However, despite only having a slightly larger screen
and using a Via Nano processor rather than the more common Atom, the
price is £70 more compared to that of its predecessor the NC10.
