A laptop for $20?

Dear Den,

As Microsoft continues to fight off the encroachment of rival web-browsing platforms like Mozilla's Firefox, and Apple increasing its share of the OS market to 10 per cent, the company has made its almost finished version of Internet Explorer 8 available for download. There were reports circulating that it was asking staff to get their friends involved in a viral marketing campaign in order to drum up interest.

We'll be posting a full review of IE 8 RC1 soon

Meanwhile the news from India saw plans for the launch of a mass-produced notebook, costing just $20.

Although detailed specs are thin on the ground, the notebook is reported to be Wi-fi enabled, with 2GB of solid state memory. Quite how achievable the $20 cost is remains to be seen and there are some reports that suggest it is more likely to come in at around £70. All the same, it will form the basis of a new e-learning initiative in the country which aims to connect 20,000 colleges and schools.

At the other end of the spectrum, IBM and the US Government plan on building a supercomputer capable of reaching speeds of up to 20-petaflops. The appropriately named Sequoia (after the giant species of redwood) will exceed the combined systems of every machine on the Top 500 supercomputer rankings, which should put its raw power into some kind of context.

Last week we mentioned the ongoing rise of the smartphone; this week's offering comes from Toshiba with its TG01 Handset. Running on Qualcomm's Snapdragon platform, the Windows mobile device will be operated through a touch interface (including tilt and shake gestures) and come with 16GB of storage (expandable to 32GB). It should be due out by summertime this year.
